Faculty of Philology

RESEARCH

Research in the Faculty of Philology explores the rich and diverse heritage of humanity through the study of language, literature, philosophy and culture. From ancient Greek and Latin literature to contemporary literary and philosophical pursuits, research in the Department of Literature explores the dynamic evolution of ideas and written and oral expression across cultural periods and societies. It reveals the roots and interactions between languages, how literary works are created and emerge, and their impact on contemporary society and culture. The objectives of the research are:

  1. The preservation and promotion of culture through the study and documentation of languages, literature and the cultural wealth created through them.
  2. Understanding the human experience through the study of the way people communicate, think and express their ideas through language.
  3. To promote linguistic and cultural understanding by developing knowledge of the languages, literatures and cultural practices of other communities and cultures.
  4. To develop language and communication skills through an understanding of the structures and functions of language. This can lead to an improvement in our language and communication skills, which are important for many areas such as communication, teaching, translation and entrepreneurship.

Due to the importance of the above objectives, research in the Department is often funded by national and European resources, and the results are disseminated through publications in international conferences as well as through the Department's journals.

The research laboratories and the Folklore Museum contribute actively and decisively to the research of the Department.

The Department of Philology also offers the possibility of conducting postdoctoral research.
