Minas Alexiadis is Professor of Folkloristics in the Department of Philology, School of Philosophy of the University of Athens, Greece.  He was born in Menetes on the island of Karpathos in the Dodecanese, Greece.  He studied Medieval and Modern Greek Philology and Folklore in the School of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina and received his first degree with distinction in 1972.  After military service (1973-1975), he taught in the Senior High School on Karpathos (1975-1977).  In 1982 he was awarded his Ph.D. with distinction in Folklore from the School of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina.  He also attended courses in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the London School of Economics (1982-1983, 1989-1990).

He worked as a professorial assistant (1977-1982), tutor and lecturer (1982-1986) in Folklore at the University of Ioannina.  In 1986 he was elected Assistant Professor and in 1992, Associate Professor in the Folklore Section of the Department of History and Archaeology at the School of Philosophy at the University of Ioannina.  In 1993 he was elected Associate Professor of Folklore in the Humanities Section of the Department of Primary Education of the University of Athens and in 1997 he was elected Professor in this department.  In 2008 he was elected Professor of Folklore in the Department of Philology at the University of Athens.  In September 2008, he was appointed Director of the Folklore Archive and Study Centre of the School of Philosophy.

He was Honorary Research Associate at King’s College, University of London (1989-1990) and Director of the Dodecanese Cultural Institute (Athens, 1992-1995).

Professor Alexiadis has been the recipient of awards from various institutions based in his native Karpathos and in the rest of the Dodecanese. He has also been honoured by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchates of Alexandria and of Constantinople, in addition to receiving numerous distinctions from other institutions, both Greek and foreign.

He is a regular member of numerous learned societies, Greek and foreign, among which are the Hellenic Folklore Society, of which he is currently General Secretary to the Council, the Folklore Society of England, the American Folklore Society and the International Society for Folk Narrative Research.  He has also been involved in scholarly exchange with the Nordic Institute of Folklore.

He has served on the candidate assessment committee of the Greek State Scholarship Foundation since 1992 and has regularly served as a committee member for academic appointments at many Greek universities.

He has written numerous studies pertaining to Greek folk culture in the form of books, articles, reviews, encyclopaedia articles and newspaper articles.  He has participated in many international conferences, being frequently involved in their organization, and has given many lectures in Greece and abroad.
